On-Site Technical Training

A soil pit with profile showing three layers labeled as 'A - Top Soil', 'O - Organic', and 'B - Laterite Soil'. There is a measuring tape indicating the depth, and a small white label is placed on the top layer. this is an example of a soil pit.
Danae Voormeij investigating very thick laterite soil in Suriname, South America.

SOIL GEOCHEMISTRY

LATERITE REGOLITH

a supergene gold nugget, high fineness, about one ounce in weight. the shape resembles the iron rich 'mottles' of the mottled zone, below the laterite and above the saprolite, this gold nugget precipitated in one of the iron rich mottles.
Diagram showing gold dispersal in tropical laterite regolith, illustrating supergene gold enrichment, quartz veins, stockwork, shear zones, rock types including saprolite, mottled zone, oxide ore, and fresh rock, with weathering front and water table marked.

EXPLORATION SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER

Exploration field team in Liberia, West Africa, where Danae Voormeij was chief geologist and led the team to the discovery of Tuzon, 2.4 million ounces of gold. Company was Hummingbird Resources.

SUPERGENE GOLD FORMATION

Mosaic pattern of water-filled pits left behind by artisanal gold miners after they have washed the laterite and saprolite soils across sluices to recover supergene gold nuggets.
